Bio

Shane Pilster is a creative dynamo who wears many hats—artist, muralist, curator, and graphic designer. His work is a unique blend of graffiti and urban art, all driven by a deep passion for community engagement. Whether he’s teaching, advocating, mentoring, or just pushing the boundaries of creativity, Shane believes in a well-rounded approach to making art.

For Shane, graffiti isn’t just an art form; it’s a powerful way to amplify voices that often go unheard. He loves sharing his deep knowledge of the craft—from its rich history to the technical skills and creative possibilities—helping others use art to spark change, both personally and in the world around them.

Originally from Santa Cruz, CA, Shane has called Pittsburgh home since 2004. In 2013, he launched the Graffiti Art Program at Rivers of Steel’s Carrie Furnaces, and he’s also a founding member of HCUAP, which hosts residencies for artists from Spanish-speaking regions like Mexico, Argentina, Spain, and Chicago. Shane’s work with nonprofits like Hip-Hop On LOCK, The Westmoreland Diversity Coalition, and The YMCA, among others, speaks to his commitment to using art as a tool for community building. He’s also collaborated with big names like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Verizon, and Condado Tacos, balancing local projects with national and international work.

With over 20 years of spray painting under his belt, 15 years of experience in youth and community engagement, and over a decade as an entrepreneur, Shane has helped create countless public art pieces, teamed up with other artists, and led a wide range of workshops. When he’s not out in the community, you can find him in his Braddock studio, where he’s always refining his craft. He’s completed over 100 projects with his artistic partner, Max Gonzales, and continues to push the envelope of what’s possible.

In Shane Pilster’s world, art isn’t just about creating something beautiful—it’s about making a difference, fostering creativity in others, and leaving a lasting impact through vibrant, meaningful expressions of art.
